Policy for the Emergency Use of Seclusion and Restraint
by the Michigan Department of Education

Seclusion and restraint are NOT needed to keep our students safe.  Click on the situations below to see where in the policy it states that seclusion and restraint are NOT needed.​

• Physically stop a student from running into the road

• Stop an impulsive action that could hurt another student

• Stop a student from hitting, kicking, punching, or hurting others

• Provide a safe space, away from others, to calm down

• Prevent a self-injurious or suicidal student from harming themself

• Break up a fight between students

• Stop a student from using a weapon or to take a weapon away

• Briefly hold a distressed student in order to calm or comfort

• Physically escort a student from one area to another

• Prevent major destruction of property of the school or others
